With all of our new ways to communicate digitally are we just reinventing a very old wheel?
I thought that Simmons was make a great case for face to face "old fashion" oral communication. As we evolve our methods and devices of communication we insulate ourselves from our audience. Whether its a blog, email, facebook, etc. over half of our communication ability is lost. We lose our unique human skills of facial expressions and vocal inflection. So much of our face to face communication is non verbal that we struggle to project the same message through digital forms of communication. Simmons examples of the power of storytelling is key evidence to this point.

This I believe is the Power of "Digital" Storytelling. Because of the use of multiple medias and the integration of interaction we can gain back some of that lost connection as compared to the basic print.

facial expressions of avatars: as technology more and more developes the way to imitate the nonverbal parts of human communication gets more improved and delicate. It is still artificial and the human nonverbal is very complex but also gives back some of the "lost connection" that John mentions above. The crucial point is that all nonverbal elements are intentionally and controlled because the user behind the avatar has to act (in true sense of the word) to make the avatar do facial expressions or gestures.
I agree and disagree. Coming from an extremely oral culture I cling to the face to face interaction of communication. I agree that a lot of web applications limtit our nonverbal cues which is such a powerful form of the human side of communication. However, I do not feel that the wheel is being reinvented, but improved upon. Technology such as web cams and streaming video allows us to move from mass communication to global communication. Feed back can be virtually instantaneous if you have the right tools. I new mom in china can share her infant with her American cousins and actually see the tears of joy all over the internet in real time. So the debate is complicated, but technology will never take the place of face to face communication.
I agree with Tonya. Not only from a oral communication culture, but from a crowed city, Taipei. We still using facial communication and body communication. But I have to admit that, I myself use MSN(typeing online message) to discuss things or chat with colleges when I work. I think it's a good way, because it can bring files, web links when chatting. The most important thing is to get a sense of: multi-functional employee.
