"Once we decide that no theory will be right all of the time, we are free to develop a few theories that are successful and often useful."

Is Simmons asking us to accept mediocrity?

Just trying to spark discussion.

I think its just the author's way of making her lesson fit all audiences.
Actual mileage may vary.
Or the old adage: "You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all the people all the time."

I think this is as close to rules as we can get when dealing with topics that are not one of the sciences.

I don't think she's telling us to accept mediocrity. I think it's more a matter of accepting that things won't always work perfectly.

Well, I guess that's why they're still theories and not principles or facts. They don't always apply. They don't fit every situation.

Because if she said that all theories were right, she would have been discredited and been proven wrong. I think she is trying to say, listen to everything once, for there is a chance they may e right .... just like a good old cop tv show right?
