I know this has already been mentioned but I totally agreed with the importance of nonverbal communication. Nonverbals can really help or hurt the understanding of your audience when telling a story. For instance, if you were to tell someone they're doing a great job but your facial expressions and actions made it seem like you were totally ticked-off, it would really confuse them. It's actually kind of fun to try sometimes just to see peoples reactions.

Experiment: When speaking to someone in the near future, put your facial expression at complete odds with what you’re saying. Keep it up for just long enough to gauge a reaction, and get a sense of how it affected your unfortunate conversation partner’s train of thought.
My prediction is people will utterly disbelieve whatever you have to say, no matter how sensible, if the accompanying expression does not correlate.
Perhaps storytelling is done entirely on the face, and words are no more than “aural” aids.
