I think the best message in the chapter applies to trying to force a message on people. The story that they used to illustrate it with the Golden Goose was a good way to convey this message to others. If you try to get to the point too soon without letting people catch on and relate to you, it is going to go nowhere.

Getting down to the base of what she had tried to tell us, neither pushing for the '110 percent' nor giving the same 'sad story' all of the time only reduces the productivity in a company. Family oriented stories are what get people going as well as talk about free time.

Now, I have done my own share of negative talk. In fact, I have done this more than I can remember. I don't know if it is in the human condition like she mentioned once in the chapter, but I just have a tendency to look at life in a negative view. My father is also a very negative person, something I blame on his accident early on that gave him his disability. It is definitely no fault of his. All I know is that I should, as well as everyone, start looking at what we are saying and try to lift spirits instead of weighing them down with small, negative thoughts.

Overall, I liked the chapter's idea on listening. I can think of a few people in my life that live the definition 'listen for your place to speak'. They will not listen to you or they will pretend like they are until you are done so they can put in their own opinion. I am even guilty of this at times. We do need to work on this as a culture that values time like currency.

I love the concept in this chapter of pulling people into your story through various means. Though without knowing it, I think I was a week ahead with my story that I told last Tuesday as there was a story like it in this chapter. Starting out with a story that would happen every day with my grandfather, then telling about what happened with him and another reason why I respect him.

I have to say that a few of these did give me a better take on how to do this correctly. I think I have put too many pauses in some stories that I have told and will have to fix that for future tellings. Though, one thing I didn't like about this chapter is that they poke fun at Garrison Keillor. I love all of the storytelling on Prairie Home Companion. It's one of the few radio shows I still listen to.

I really enjoyed reading about this idea. I know that a lot of people use it either for everyday uses or for something as important to them as politics and for religion.

My question is this.

While I too wait for my book, I wish to ask a question based on my work over the summer of 'Video Editing Slave' at a local news station.

Do you think that the broadcast news industry faces a crisis right now with online blogs that cover news stories? What about regular news sites that are able to update instantly such as Wikipedia and the outlets such as Yahoo? And if so, what do you think they can do to keep up, short of becoming an internet company themselves?
