I have to say that a few of these did give me a better take on how to do this correctly. I think I have put too many pauses in some stories that I have told and will have to fix that for future tellings. Though, one thing I didn't like about this chapter is that they poke fun at Garrison Keillor. I love all of the storytelling on Prairie Home Companion. It's one of the few radio shows I still listen to.

And does that go against Simmons' idea that a story needs visual cues?

Radio can be a powerful and entertaining medium, especially something like A Prarie Home Companion.

One friend of mine put it like this, regarding Garrison Keillor’s voice: “I would jump across the room and unplug the radio to avoid hearing that self-congratulatory boom. It’s like a buzz saw to the brain.”

I don’t happen to agree, but the comment demonstrates what I think is one thing Keillor does terribly: pauses.

The only time you hear this man stop is on the inhale. So often he can come across as a professor addressing an errant student. Not much fun if you’re uncomfortable being talked at.

Even the best can benefit from self-analysis, is what I mean. Don’t worry too much about your pauses.
